Christmas shopping in the city
Christmas shopping in Edinburgh feels a little more special at this time of year.
Start around George Street and Multrees Walk for a mixture of luxury brands, familiar favourites and festive window displays, before wandering towards Princes Street and St James Quarter. If you prefer something more independent, Stockbridge is full of charming boutiques, bookshops and delicatessens where you’re likely to discover gifts with a little more character.
The Edinburgh Christmas Market is also well worth exploring, with stalls selling handmade gifts, festive treats and seasonal decorations.

An afternoon on the ice
For a little festive fun, head to George Street and take to the ice.
Skating beneath the Christmas lights makes for a particularly magical winter experience, whether you’re confidently gliding around the rink or spending most of your time trying to stay upright. It’s a lovely way to embrace the season and adds a little nostalgia to a winter’s day in the city.

Few places capture Christmas in Edinburgh quite like The Dome on George Street.

Few things feel more Christmassy than a proper hot chocolate, and Knoops on George Street is an excellent stop while exploring the New Town. If you find yourself in Stockbridge, O Chocolates offers another lovely spot for something sweet and warming.

As the temperature drops and the Christmas lights begin to glow, it’s time for something comforting.
Christmas in Edinburgh isn’t just about markets and decorations — it’s also a very good excuse to enjoy warming food. Think hearty pies, steaming bowls of soup, classic pub favourites and meals best enjoyed somewhere cosy.

Finish the evening at Christmas at the Botanics
If you still have some festive energy left, finish the day with Christmas at the Botanics.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is transformed after dark into an illuminated winter wonderland, with beautiful light installations winding through the gardens. The 2026 trail runs from 19 November to 30 December, featuring returning favourites including the Christmas Cathedral and Fire Garden alongside new light installations.
Seasonal food and drinks are available along the route, adding to the atmosphere and helping keep the winter chill at bay.
